Nurturing Research Conference 2024 - Friday 21st June 2024, Manchester Metropolitan University (Refreshments and lunch included)

We are delighted to announce the Nurturing Research conference which will take place on Friday the 21st June at Manchester Metropolitan University. The conference is aimed at anyone who has started their journey or is preparing to start the journey as a researcher in any capacity. This includes those who are working towards or are already at level 7 (MSc), those who want to develop their research pillar of Advanced Clinical Practice or just any MSK physiotherapist who has started to dip their toes in the water and would like a safe place to develop their research skills.

The conference will consist of invited speaker sessions, workshops and oral and poster presentation of submitted abstracts. However all of these sessions are aimed at helping to develop more novice researchers. Our invited speakers are eminent researchers who will discuss their own personal research journeys.

We are delighted to welcome Professor Caroline Alexander, Professor Dylan Morrissey and Professor Lisa Roberts. We will also have sessions on quality improvement, NIHR Fellowships as well as getting started in research.

You can hear more about the conference in this short video

Abstract Submissions are welcome from any MSK Physio – click here to submit, closing date for submissions is 5th February 2024. Abstracts may include original research, audit or quality improvement studies. All submitted abstracts and all presentations (poster or oral) will receive feedback delivered in a nurturing format - the key aim is to support and develop new researchers.

Early bird prices are Members £55 and Non Members £65 (Early bird ends 30th April 2024). From 1st May 2024 prices will be Members £75 and Non Members £85. You do not need to be an MACP member to book however non-members will be asked to create a user account on our website.

ARMA’s work on Health Inequalities and local services

MSK health inequalities inquiry (UK)

The aims of the Inquiry

·       Set out the evidence for inequalities in MSK health related to deprivation and explore the possible underlying reasons.

·       Propose actions which can be taken to address these, both in design and delivery of MSK services, and actions to address wider determinants of health and prevention.

·       Raise the profile of the issues and possible solutions.

The process

·       Evidence gathering (literature review, calls for evidence & lived experience survey)

·       All evidence submitted will be read, analysed and summarised.

·       The summaries will be read and discussed by a lived experience panel.

·       We will hold around 3 evidence sessions where we will invite people to discuss their evidence in more detail. These sessions will be live online for anyone who wishes to observe.

·       An expert advisory panel will meet to give advice to the inquiry.

·       The project team and the lived experience panel will discuss all the evidence submitted and draw conclusions.

·       These conclusions will be written into a report which will be published at the end of this year.

·       2024 will be phase 2 – dissemination of findings and promoting uptake of recommendations.

Some emerging themes

·       Data – identifying and monitoring inequalities, know your community

·       Engagement with communities and coproduction

·       Moving service delivery into the community

·       Strategies to build self-management skills (some differing opinions)

·       Addressing modifiable risk factors – inactivity, smoking, obesity, alcohol.

·       How to address wider determinants of health?

Local Services Project (currently England only)

·       Priority given to MSK by ICBs variable.

·       Nationally increasing profile for MSK not reflected locally.

·       Need to drive MSK up the ICB agenda.
